Snow on the bed

In my house, we have a framed picture that was given to us by Peter’s parents.  I’ve been focused on it as I think about this month of gratitude. Practicing gratitude can lead to many benefits including improved mood, better relationships, increased resilience to stress, reduced anxiety and depression, enhanced sleep quality, and even potential physical health advantages like lower blood pressure.  Gratitude helps individuals focus on the positive aspects of their lives and fosters a more positive outlook.  All of these are pretty well known and powerful advantages.

But then I come to the picture I mentioned.  It seems to take the notion of gratitude a bit further.  On the canvas there is a poem, written by the Haiku master, Issa, in the 1700’s.

There are thanks to be given

This snow on the bed quilt

It too is from heaven

It is so much harder to be grateful for the “snow” on our own bed quilts or in our own lives.  I can persevere through or tolerate my own challenges, but give thanks for them?  Ugh.  That is much harder.  I wonder if the benefits of gratitude would be even greater if I could do this?

Although I’ve never really appreciated my challenges, in fact, I’d rather not have them. (Can I just say “no thank you”?)  I’m noticing that the passing of time helps me to recognize the growth I’ve experienced.  The strength I’ve gained.  Or the wisdom I’ve earned.   With time, I think I am  learning to trust that snow is also from heaven. Struggles are a part of every life. How we get through them differs greatly. This is where Life Coaching can really help.

I’m wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with friends and family,

Kathie
