Decisions
“The power you have in your life is found in each decision you make” - Brooke Castillo
Brooke Castillo is the founder and creator of The Life Coach School and a teacher that I’ve learned a lot from this past year. I love the idea that your life is in your hands, it isn’t something that just happens to you. It is sometimes easy to think that life just happens to us and we have only to react. But to believe this abdicates our own power. It is our ability to decide and to make decisions that create both power and strength in us.
Whether we are conscious or not, we are always making decisions. Some decisions we have made in the past have determined where we are now and what we are doing (Marriage, career choices, children). Other decisions we are living with everyday (exercise today or stay on the couch). We love some of our decisions and others we pretend that we had nothing to do with.
The fact is, we are continually re-making decisions every single day. It is easy to think we are “stuck” in a place and that we have no choice . . . but we ALWAYS have a choice. We have options, opportunities to re-decide, chances to reframe, moments to recommit. In fact, in this world, we don’t really HAVE to do anything… all of it is optional. Do you have to go to work today? No. Do you have to tend your children today? (No) Do you need to care for your aging mother this morning? No. If we didn’t do these things there may be consequences we don’t like, but ultimately the choice is ours.
One place I’ve seen people hide (and I’ve done this myself if I’m being honest) is in the land of overwhelm, I-don’t-know, and uncertainty. We put off decisions, or ignore our part in making them, because we think we just don’t know what to do. Next time you are in this situation ask yourself, “What if I did know what to do? What would I do?”. Our inner wisdom is there. We know much more than we think. We are capable and smart. We can be happy in any circumstance. We can re-decide anything/everything if we want to.
Maybe it would help to know that decisions are just thoughts that we are committed to. Thoughts . . . the source of our power.
