Magic
I’ve been busy this week, trying to create a little magic. Do you ever take time to do that?
If you are a grandchild in my family, and you are 5 years old or older… you get a special invitation to attend Grammie Camp, held each summer in Farf Town (this is what they call our house)! For three or four days, there are no parents, few rules, and hopefully lots of magic. What is the goal? I want to create moments in the lives of these kids... I want to create moments that delight and inspire. I want to create experiences that I hope they will cherish and draw on for the next 80 years.
We’ve had a lot of fun so far. From the painting class we took together to the duffy boat ride in Newport Beach when I let them jump in the water with their clothes on, to cooking lessons with their Far Far, each a fantastic memory that they quickly recount as they try to needle this years agenda out of me.
Creating moments for these kids that rise above the everyday is a huge source of joy for me. In his book “The Power of Moments” Chip Heath talks about the elements that create “memorable delight” and why these defining moments have such a powerful impact in our lives. Did you know we don’t have to wait for these moments to just happen? Moments that have elements of connection, pride, insight and delight can be deliberately created. They have an impact because they can rewire our understanding of ourselves and our world. Occasionally, we have to create these moments for ourselves as well. (Today I signed up for a surfing lesson, just me… and hopefully my moment) The power to create whatever we want in our lives is part of our divinity… our magic. We are always creating.
So . . . it begs the question…. what are you creating for yourself?
